Hunting Dogs, Skukuza, Kruger

Hunting Dog was one of our 'must see' mammals in Kruger. We knew the roads that they favoured so at 4.30am we headed off in that direction. Passing a few elephants, hyenas, a leopard that soon skulked off into the scrub and was lost to view and the sunrise nightjars that flew from the roads. The sun was up by 5am and another day was breaking. We could see animals infront of us running along the road, going at a hell of a speed and we soon caught up with them to see that it was our pack of hunting dogs. Oh my goodness, what am amazing sight. We were to discover that they were returning home to their cubs after a nights hunting. Some of them were literally covered and almost dripping in blood. Not for the feint-hearted ! They ran and ran for what seemed like miles but we always kept our distance and, by this time, a few other cars had joined us. We could see the pups running out into the road to meet their parents, and hopefully breakfast. They were not disappointed with each parent vomiting a good meal up for them all. They then all settled to play and greet one another for about an hour before a sign was sent out that more hunting was to be done and off they all ran again, at speed, chasing a herd of distant impala. One of the highlights of our trip. We were well made up.....leopard and hunting dog before breakfast. Life doesn't get much better !
