Major Oak, Sherwood Forest

The Major Oak  (Quercus Robur) in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire. A tree that has ties to the world famous Robin Hood and his Merry Men who, as the story goes, used to sleep in it in days gone by.  The Major Oak is between 800 and 1000 years old, has a girth of 33 feet and weighs 23 tonnes. It was voted 'Tree of the Year' by the Woodland Trust.

Being a local, I spent many a Sunday afternoon as a kid playing in and around this tree. In my day there wasn't a fence or the supports so we were all free to chase and hide in it. I remember it well !
