African Penguins, Boulders Beach, Cape Town, South Africa

A short, very scenic drive to Boulders Beach to see the African Penguins did not disappoint as on the way we saw many, many hump-backed whales, all of them breaching totally out of the water. It was something we will remember forever. We had many stops and drew quite a crowd when we stopped. The whales were not close but their breaching, rolling and slapping the water was a sight to see. Spectacular !

But we have to admit that the penguin colony was a slight disappointment with bus trips and people, most simply wanting a selfie with a penguin, none of them appreciating how rare and endangered they are and that they were actually birds. The fences erected to stop the penguins straying onto the road and into peoples gardens gave it a bit of a zoo look. But it was a new bird for us and we went on a weekday so the crowds were not huge. Heaven only knows what it is like at the weekend. Once we had walked the boardwalk we could see the penguins out on the beach and rocks, away from people !

African Penguins - they nest among the roots and the fence you can see keeps them safe from the busy road. They did seem perfectly happy to be honest.
