Corncrakes on Iona
One of the highlights of our trip was a day on Iona for the Corncrakes. We left Mull with lovely blue sky but after our 10 minute crossing, the weather had totally changed and rain was falling. Well, it was torrential all day but the more it rained, the more the corncrakes sang and ran around. So, we were soaked to the skin but had the best views of corncrakes ever !
It was one of those fabulous birdy days with such quality birds.
The Isle of Mull
There was still snow on the tops !
The scenery was just stunning, breath takingly good. The only down side were the single track roads with no places to stop and appreciate the views.

Main Street, Tobermory. We stayed in the last blue house which was Pocket and Sweet's Shop from the children's TV programme 'What's the Story Balamory'.
The view didn't come much better than this, stunning !

Frampton Spoonbill
With very little else to see locally, we decided to head to Frampton. When we got there we wondered why we had bothered ! The highlight of the afternoon was this spoonbill that flew in, yet remained quite distant.

A day at Spurn
Wheatear

A lovely day spent at Kilnsea with a wheatear before we had even parked the car. Onto Kilnsea wetlands with more wheatears, a couple of whinchats, 2 ring ouzels, 2 pairs of red-breasted mergansers, 10 whimbrel and lots of little terns. A male redstart was at the farm, although it remained either in the long grass or hidden in an apple tree covered in blossom ! A pipistrelle bat was also on the wall of the farm, warming in the sun, then flew around hunting. An unusual sight for midday. A female redstart was at the Canal Hide along with more wheatears and this yellow wagtail.
Afraid still no cuckoo or turtle dove yet this year.

Early Purple Orchids
This year is the best showing of early purple orchids we have ever seen on our local meadow.
It really is a stunning sight !

Tree Pipit
Our local tree pipits have arrived back and are in full song.
Afraid no cuckoo, turtle dove or swift yet.
