Scotland May 2010

Just had a few days in The Boat of Garton, Scotland. The birding was absolutely dire. It was still winter there with no buds, let alone leaves, on the trees. We had rain, hail and snow. There was a serious lack of all birds which makes us think that the long, hard winter has taken its toll. Resident species were obviously absent. Local birders say that most birds died last winter. Raptors were especially poor which makes you think that they are being persecuted. The snow damage was there to see on all the trees with most trees loosing limbs or suffering die back. This was the worst birding holiday we have ever had and came home after 4 days.

Scotland

Red Grouse

Plenty of these around. Lovely whisky!

Red Deer

Findhorn Valley, loads of them but very unsettled and nervous.

Isle of Skye

With the lack of birds we took to the scenery. Managed a sea eagle on Skye and a very, very distant pair of golden eagles. The scenery on the drive there was absolutely fantastic, a mountain round every corner.

Karen

There must be a bird here somewhere, any bird will do..........a birdless Scotland!

I'm sure standing on a rock will make me look taller!

Simon

Findhorn Valley, Scottish Highlands. Hoping for lots of eagles, how disappointed we were!

Tallest Tree in Great Britain

A Douglas Fir at a staggering 66m and still growing! The tallest tree in Britain.

The Hermitage

The Hermitage, just north of Perth. Home to the tallest tree in Great Britain.
